Healing Garden

Client Goals:

E’s goal was to find a place of healing and serenity by creating a garden full of beauty, life and color.  She was interested in tropical fruits, several raised bed vegetable gardens, and many other edible medicinal and native plants.

Site Features:

The location for the garden was alongside the home, in a spacious lawn area flanked by a row of tall coconut palms.  The garden needed to be designed carefully so as to not interfere with the drainfield/septic system.  This required that the fruit trees and long term perennials were located well away from this area, and the raised bed gardens were placed over the drainfield to utilize that growing space.

Design elements:

Key features of the design are: Fruit tree and companion plant guilds, raised bed gardens for vegetables, native pollinator and wildflower gardens, a fruit tree circle, spice trees and dragon fruit, as well as blueberries, muscadine grapes, and blackberries.

Installation Process:

  • Step 1: Installing new irrigation line to the food forest/edible forest garden

  • Step 2: Cutting out the sod and installing fruit trees and other large perennials:

  • Step 3: Planting understory plants, edibles, native groundcovers and wildflowers.

  • Step 4: Building the raised bed gardens and filling with growing mix:

  • Step 5: Build trellises and support for climbing plants, such as muscadine grapes, passionfruit and dragon fruit.

  • Step 6: Apply a thick layer of mulch to prevent weeds, add organic matter to the soil and reduce moisture loss.
